The Concept of Mass in the Einstein Year

چکیده

Various facets of the concept of mass are discussed. The masses of elementary particles and the search for higgs. The masses of hadrons. The pedagogical virus of relativistic mass. 1 From “Principia” to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) The term “mass’ was introduced into mechanics by Newton in 1687 in his “Principia” [1]. He defined it as the amount of matter. The generally accepted definition of matter does not exist even today. Some authors of physics text-books do not consider photons – particles of light – as particles of matter, because they are massless. For the same reason they do not consider as matter the electromagnetic field. It is not quite clear whether they consider as matter almost massless neutrinos, which usually move with velocity close to that of light. Of course it is impossible to collect a handful of neutrinos similarly to a handful of coins. But in many other respects both photons and neutrinos behave like classical particles, while the electromagnetic field is the basis of our understanding of the structure of atoms. On the other hand, the so-called weak bosons W, W−, Z are often not considered as particles of matter because they are too heavy and too short-lived. Even more unusual are such particles as gluons and quarks. Unlike atoms, nucleons, and leptons, they do not exist in a free state: they are permanently confined inside nucleons and other hadrons. There is no doubt that the problem of mass is one of the key problems of modern physics. Though there is no common opinion even among the Presented at the 12th Lomonosov conference on Elementary Particle Physics, Moscow State University, August 25-31.

Conformal mappings preserving the Einstein tensor of Weyl manifolds

In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a conformal mapping between two Weyl manifolds to preserve Einstein tensor. Then we prove that some basic curvature tensors of $W_n$ are preserved by such a conformal mapping if and only if the covector field of the mapping is locally a gradient. Also, we obtained the relation between the scalar curvatures of the Weyl manifolds r...

On quasi-Einstein Finsler spaces‎

‎The notion of quasi-Einstein metric in physics is equivalent to the notion of Ricci soliton in Riemannian spaces‎. ‎Quasi-Einstein metrics serve also as solution to the Ricci flow equation‎. ‎Here‎, ‎the Riemannian metric is replaced by a Hessian matrix derived from a Finsler structure and a quasi-Einstein Finsler metric is defined‎. ‎In compact case‎, ‎it is proved that the quasi-Einstein met...

The Intrinsic Beauty, Harmony and Interdisciplinarity in Einstein Velocity Addition Law: Gyrogroups and Gyrovector Spaces

The only justification for the Einstein velocity addition law ‎appeared to be its empirical adequacy‎, ‎so that the ‎intrinsic beauty and harmony in Einstein addition remained for a long time ‎a mystery to be conquered‎. ‎Accordingly‎, ‎the aim of this expository article is to present ‎(i) the Einstein relativistic vector addition‎, ‎(ii) the resulting Einstein scalar multiplication‎, ‎(iii) th...

Einstein structures on four-dimensional nutral Lie groups

When Einstein was thinking about the theory of general relativity based on the elimination of especial relativity constraints (especially the geometric relationship of space and time), he understood the first limitation of especial relativity is ignoring changes over time. Because in especial relativity, only the curvature of the space was considered. Therefore, tensor calculations should be to...

افت و خیزهای برداری حول جواب وسون

In Wesson's canonical model, the universe is assumed to be five dimensional (5D) empty space time. This model corresponds to a solution of the Einstein field equation in five dimensions which, from a four dimensional point of view, is equivalent to a universe with a positive cosmological constant. In this model, the fifth direction is perpendicular to the four dimensional space time and is not...
